Adhesive tapes, graphic films and sophisticated labels for upmarket consumer goods demand innovative adhesives, and Henkel has developed a comprehensive portfolio to meet such needs. Offering solutions in both areas, it comprises removable, repositionable and permanent products.

Flexible packages offer top functionality combined with low material costs and low weight. Manufacturing them demands increasingly innovative and sustainable solutions. To meet these needs, Henkel has expanded its product portfolio by adding a new solvent-free Liofol brand laminating adhesive based on renewable raw materials that makes it ideal for biofilms. In addition, the globally leading adhesives manufacturer is presenting two solvent-free and TDI-free laminating systems with a long pot life.

Since 2011, packages for food have been subjected to even more stringent regulations than ever. They are governed by legislation such as the European regulation on plastic materials, which specifies limits for migration of ingredients into packaged foods. In order to ensure that practically no substances can migrate from the adhesive to the food, Henkel is now offering Low Migration versions of its well-known water-based adhesives under the Adhesin brand.

Henkel has signed an agreement with the US-based specialty chemicals company Cytec Industries Inc. to acquire its high-performance pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) product range. Pressure sensitive adhesives are specialized adhesives used in the packaging, automotive, electronic and durable goods industries for foils and films, tapes or labels offering high performance adhesive characteristics.

At this year’s SURFAIR in Biarritz, France, the emphasis lies on sustainable innovations in surface treatments for the aerospace industry. During the conference, Henkel will be presenting the new products Alodine 5923 Plus, a chromate-free conversion coating, and the borate- and silicate-free cleaner Turco C 8000 GL. In addition, the globally leading adhesives manufacturer will be introducing a new three-component technology for surface treatment.

For high-volume applications like laminating, efficient processing is especially important. The innovative Aerobond system from Henkel significantly speeds up laminating processes in the paper and woodworking industry while improving their efficiency at the same time.

Digital printing is booming. Books on demand, photo books, doctoral theses or small print runs of catalogs and company brochures are increasingly being produced digitally rather than by classic offset printing. Henkel has put together a complete product range of bookbinding adhesives to meet the specific needs of this sector.

For high-performance spine gluing of books and brochures, precise application of the adhesive is absolutely essential. Any errors at this stage in the bookbinding machine can rapidly lead to several thousand rejects. Henkel is now offering the “Smart Control” monitoring system that allows users to detect production errors instantly.

With its range of emission-reduced polyurethane hotmelt adhesives (PUR hotmelts), Henkel is setting new standards of occupational health and safety in the graphic arts industry. The innovative adhesives of the Purmelt MicroEmission series are a response to the growing awareness of the need for sustainable production processes in the industry and are recommended by accident insurance institutions. At Drupa 2012, Henkel is presenting improved products for spine binding and also emission-reduced PUR hotmelts for side gluing and endpapering.

Henkel will be showcasing its complete portfolio of products and technologies for the printing and packaging industries at Drupa 2012 from May 3 to 16 in Düsseldorf. The global leader in adhesives, sealants and surface treatments will be presenting innovations ranging from an automatic monitoring system for spine gluing in bookbinding machines and especially eco-sustainable laminating adhesives to Low Migration effect coatings that give food packages a brilliant metallic gloss.

Henkel will discuss its new coating technology for automotive combustion engine applications in a technical presentation at SAE World Congress and Exposition. It highlights a study Henkel conducted in collaboration with FEV that shows that Henkel’s Electro Ceramic coating technology reduces emission formation and has the potential to reduce fuel consumption inside the combustion chamber of internal combustion engines.

At the 2012 World Battery Congress, Henkel will discuss advances in sealing material for the containment of fluids or gases without leaks for the life of high voltage batteries and fuel cells. Additionally, the presentation will cover methods for evaluating energy performance requirements, and effective seal designs for demanding environments.

Henkel has recently been chosen by the British company Rexam plc, the world’s largest beverage can manufacturer, to receive its prestigious “Supplier of the Year” award. Loctite instant adhesives for industrial applications already encompass a broad range of different categories, such as light-curing, low-bloom, impact and shock resistant, as well as toughened products for flexible bond lines. Loctite instant adhesives are also extensively used for joining difficult-to-bond plastics, for gap-filling applications and in medical devices. Now, with Loctite 401, 406 and 454, three products with an enhanced formulation have been launched onto the market, capable of withstanding service temperatures of up to 120 °C.

In a significant formulation breakthrough, Henkel Electronic Materials announces that it has developed a new electrically conductive adhesive (ECA) compatible with lower-cost, tin-terminated components to enable more cost-effective assembly processes.  The new material, Ablestik ICP-3535M1 is a one-component, pre-mixed ECA that provides low and stable contact resistance when used with 100% tin-terminated components.

Henkel-sponsored freestyle snowmobiler Levi LaVallee just shattered his standing world record for distance jumping on a snowmobile by soaring 412 feet, 6 inches over San Diego harbor. LaValle, who relies upon Loctite brand adhesives and sealants to keep his sled in top form, blasted toward the takeoff ramp at 100 mph, launched through the air across the gap between the North and South parks of Embarcadero Marina Park, and touched down forcefully but safely on the exit ramp.

The Dakar Rally! The world’s most grueling and most challenging annual off-road cross-country rally. Hosted in South America, this year’s Dakar Rally entails surmounting nature’s forces like the wide plains in Argentina, the gigantic Andes Mountains and the severe desert climate from Chile to Peru – and these natural forces are the major hurdles during this race.

So near…! And even if the young Brit sponsored by the General Industry business of Henkel ultimately missed bagging a double title, this hardly cast a shadow on his overall performance.

For the eighth time in a row, Henkel will sponsor the Dakar Rally which takes place January 1 to 15, 2012 in Argentina, Chile and Peru. Loctite and Teroson adhesives and sealants will be used to quickly repair any off-road vehicle, truck or motorbike that has been damaged during the 9,000 kilometres race. To support the racing teams and to ensure that the Loctite and Teroson specialised products are used in the most effective manner, a highly skilled Henkel technical team – so called “Loctite Charlies” – will accompany the rally from the start to the podium in Lima, Peru.

Dubai – the city of superlatives. One of the most spectacular mega-projects of the City is the "Dubai Silicon Oasis". Here - in the Arabic version of the legendary Silicon Valley - Henkel has opened in November its new regional office.

At the Brau Beviale, a capital goods fair for the beverage industry, Henkel will be showcasing its Optal XP product series, a new generation of synthetic adhesives for glass bottle labeling, in the Nürnberg Exhibition Center (Hall 4A/311) from November 9 to 11.

As the functionality of modern electronics products has increased exponentially in tandem with decreasing dimensions, the demands on performance and reliability of electronic materials have reached an unprecedented level. Today’s electronic materials – spanning nearly all market sectors – must deliver on consumer performance expectations while also ensuring environmental responsibility and lower costs. Addressing these challenges, Henkel has developed a range of innovations which it will debut from stand 263 in hall 4 at productronica, taking place from 15th to 18th November in Munich, Germany.

Innovative polyamide-based hotmelts will be a main focus of Henkel in Munich from November 15 to 18, 2011, at productronica, the leading global trade fair for electronics production. The Macromelt brand products are injection molded at a pressure of about 40 bar and temperatures of less than 230 degrees Celsius, thus preventing damage to sensitive electronic components and allowing the use of cost-effective mold sets made of aluminum rather than steel. The molding compound cures within just one minute and the components are then ready for further processing.

With the advent of new methods for narrow-surface lamination making use of laser or plasma technology, there is now again a strong focus on bondline quality and on the “zero bondline” in particular. But bondline appearance is just as important in conventional edgebanding with hotmelt adhesives. Recent developments in both machinery and adhesives aim to optimize it further.

By developing a completely new generation of bactericide-free cutting fluids, Henkel has succeeded in banishing the drawback of emulsions splitting in use and the related bad odor nuisance, thus providing a long-awaited answer to a major problem associated with water-miscible metalworking fluids. The new emulsions of the Multan brand have proved themselves in industrial practice.

Henkel’s Loctite brand will be expanding its health and safety range in mid October with not just one but three innovative anaerobic products at once. The retaining adhesive Loctite 6300 for cylindrical assemblies, gasketing product Loctite 5800, and the thread sealant Loctite 5400 all underscore Henkel’s leading role in combining technology with sustainability. The company is the only one to offer a complete portfolio of non-hazardous anaerobic adhesives.

With its new non-hazardous polyurethane hotmelt Purmelt MicroEmission Cool 3400 for perfect binding of books and brochures, Henkel is providing the first powerful adhesive with an application temperature of less than 100 degrees Celsius. This reduces energy consumption and significantly speeds up processes. The result is an extremely strong bond and reliable processing, even with low adhesive consumption.

Henkel received Rexam’s “Be The Best” Excellence Award in the two categories “Silver Operational Excellence Level” and “Total Cost Reduction” in August 2011 as a result of the implementation of new technologies in Brazil. Henkel was the only direct material supplier to receive the highest award category of silver rating from Rexam at the annual Supplier Excellence Conference.

For the first time, Henkel will be present with its own stand at the international congress SolarPACES where it will be presenting innovative solutions for the concentrated solar power (CSP) industry. The high-performance adhesives and sealants from Henkel make a substantial contribution to raising quality and lowering costs in the manufacture of products for the solar industry. The congress is taking place in Granada, Spain, from Tuesday the 20th to Friday the 23rd of September 2011.

The new one-component laminating adhesive features an extremely fast cure, combined with high initial bond strength. At the 7th ICE Europe in Munich, Henkel is presenting the first-ever laminating adhesive that contains no free isocyanates: Liofol Fast One LA 1640-21. Henkel experts with comprehensive know-how will be available to discuss the topic with interested parties, and will present this innovation at Stand 230 in Hall B6.

The energy turnaround and the push to expand renewable energy generation is posing major challenges for manufacturers of wind energy plants. To ensure economic viability, efforts are focusing first on improving the availability and productivity of existing production facilities. One of the wind energy industry’s top priorities is to maximize utilization rates by speeding up manufacturing processes in order to reduce unit costs and achieve a rapid payback on investments. Henkel held a ground breaking ceremony to commemorate the start of construction for its 150,000 square-meter adhesives factory in Shanghai Chemical Industry Park. Breaking new ground in materials innovation, Henkel Electronic Materials has announced its success with a revolutionary silver (Ag) sintering technology that enables high volume production of modern power packages in a process that does not require pressure. In its market debut, Henkel’s Ag sintering capability has been designed into Ablestik SSP2000, a high reliability die attach material well-suited for use with power modules such as IGBTs and high power LED products. 

Henkel announces that it has worked with STMicroelectronics, one of the world’s largest semiconductor companies and advanced chip packaging technology developers, to validate the performance of Henkel’s Ablestik C100 conductive die attach film materials for production of very small package configurations in a process called ScalPack, which incorporates die with extremely small dimensions

In electrical equipment that generates heat, cable bundles must be durably protected against high temperatures. With Terostat 3631 FR, Henkel has developed a flame retardant and easily applied butyl sealant which is especially suitable for applications where low flammability is essential.

Loctite 5776 is the new thread sealant from Henkel specifically engineered for metal threads. The product has obtained German approvals for use in potable water (KTW) and gas (DVGW) piping systems.

At this year’s LIGNA trade fair in Hannover, Henkel is represented as a member of Gütegemeinschaft Dreidimensionale Möbelfronten e.V., a quality association for three-dimensional furniture fronts. Founded in March 2011, the association has set itself the task of establishing a verifiable quality system with the aim of introducing an RAL quality mark. The winners of the first interactive Henkel Adhesive Packaging Design Contest have been named. From some 400 submitted proposals a jury of business and research experts chose the three most innovative packaging designs for adhesives. The winners of this interactive contest will receive a cash prize of 3,000, 1,500 and 500 euros, respectively. A special award will also be conferred on two contestants who stood out for their exceptional contributions and fairness. They can look forward to an iPad.

With its P3 Scribex 400 series, Henkel has developed a safe and environmentally sound cleaning solution for removing graffiti from rail vehicles. Unlike standard products, these cleaners do not require hazard labeling. They contain no hazardous ingredients, have low flammability and a low content of volatile organic compounds (VOC).

Ceramishield RobotIQ is a system developed by Henkel specifically for fully automatic coating of contact tips and gas shrouds in welding robots. This combination of the dry-film coating Ceramishield LW-1 and fully automatic coating equipment offers long-term spatter protection in MIG/MAG robotic welding applications.

The key criteria for the use of hotmelt adhesives in the packaging industry include high yield, productivity and long-term availability. Under the Technomelt brand, Henkel is now launching two hotmelt adhesives onto the market that have been developed specifically to meet these requirements. Alongside their bond strength, Technomelt Supra 145 and Technomelt Supreme are compelling products affording low consumption values as well as improved flowability in automatic application systems. Both products make use of a new raw material base, which offers the customer a broader spectrum of products, greater choice and enhanced flexibility.

Sealants with new properties offer advantageous design possibilities in numerous industrial manufacturing processes. One such sealant that is especially suitable for use in refrigeration equipment is Terostat 301. In these applications the first heat-conductive butyl sealant from Henkel replaces classic heat-conductive pastes to improve heat exchange between the inner housing and the heat exchanger.

Henkel as a systems provider for medical engineering lately developed the brand-new LOCTITE AssureCure system. The revolutionary technology combines a newly developed LOCTITE adhesive with a new monitoring system. This promises to provide a hitherto unrivalled level of reliability and precision in the curing of light cure adhesives as the basis for perfect bonding.

Designed with modern manufacturing requirements in mind, Henkel Electronic Materials has formulated Multicore MF210, a no-clean sustained activity flux that is compatible with both lead-free and tin-lead processes. The halide-free, resin-free material is effective with a wide range of solder resists, as well as rosin and OSP-based protectants for maximum adaptability.

Poor sealing of ventilation systems in buildings results in rising energy costs and the formation of mold. Air ducts are often constructed using pre-manufactured rubber compression gaskets to seal the transitions between the individual elements. Over time, however, these gaskets lose their elasticity and become brittle. As they shrink, their sealing effect decreases, leaving cavities in which mold can form.

Henkel – the world market leader in adhesives, sealants and surface treatments for consumers, craftsmen and industrial applications, and Holst Centre – an open-innovation initiative by imec (B) and TNO (NL), announce their partnership in the field of flexible electronics. Henkel’s knowhow in adhesives brings a new field of expertise to the Holst Centre’s shared research programs. The latest in a series of recent materials innovation successes, Henkel Electronics announced the development and commercial availability of its Ablestik C100 series conductive die attach films. With relatively few, if any, conductive die attach films on the market until now, the launch of this material advance effectively establishes the benchmark for conductive die attach film solutions.

At the ZOW 2011 in Bad Salzuflen, adhesive supplier Henkel is presenting tailor-made solutions for the production of visually attractive and high-quality furniture. Thanks to a new laminating process, it is now possible to use a newly developed hotmelt adhesive that combines excellent surface quality with high environmental compatibility.

Flexible packages are gaining increasingly large market shares throughout the food industry. At the same time, film/foil laminates have to meet ever more stringent technological and food law requirements. With its international series of “Liofol Academy Road Show” events, Henkel offers packaging manufacturers from Eastern Europe region the opportunity to learn about current challenges and about forward-looking solutions for the packaging industry. 

On February 7, Henkel has launched the Henkel Adhesive Packaging Design Contest (www.packdesign-contest.com). This online contest is about developing innovative ideas and designs for the packaging of Henkel consumer adhesive products.

Filters are used in many different areas and applications to clean air and liquids. When producing consumer and industrial goods, adhesives play a decisive role. To meet the high expectations of industry, Henkel invests in research and develops new technologies. At the FILTECH 2011 trade fair, Henkel will be presenting an up-to-date product portfolio for construction of modern filter systems.

Starting on Monday, 7th February, Henkel is inviting participants to a packaging design contest. In the Adhesives Packaging Design Contest, everyone with creative skills may submit designs for adhesives packaging. Unlike the usual contests, it will be possible to discuss and vote for the proposals through an online platform; then, a panel of experts from the fields of business and vocational training will select the winner. The best design will be rewarded with prize money of 3,000 euros. The deadline for submission of entries is 18th March 2011.

Henkel is presenting its innovative solutions along the entire value chain at the MEDTEC Europe 2011 trade show. In addition to a broad range of specialty adhesives designed for the manufacturing of medical devices, an extensive product portfolio for mechanical processing, metal pretreatment and partial cleaning is presented. Modern car bodies contain numerous joint seals that must be reapplied when a repair is made.  Through the use of the new sealants Terostat 9120 SuperFast & Terostat 9320 SuperFast 6in1, workshops can shorten this process considerably. Manufacturing of adhesive tapes for consumer use and industrial applications is a highly specialized industry with high potential for the future. The success of any adhesive tape depends to a large extent on the adhesive itself, which has to satisfy a wide variety of requirements. At the Henkel Tapes Symposium 2010, adhesive tape manufacturers from all over Europe came together to learn about the latest technologies and industry trends in the market for pressure sensitive adhesives.

Just a few months after its launch, the newly developed Technomelt Supra Cool 130 from Henkel has already surpassed the high expectations put on it. Its benefits include high bond strength, excellent thermal stability, outstanding flowability, and a broader application spectrum than EVA-based hotmelts – and all of this at a processing temperature of only 130°C in the melter.

BASF Coatings GmbH and Henkel AG & Co KGaA have signed a joint venture agreement to develop innovative corrosion protection solutions for the automotive industry. The 50/50 venture, pending approval of the German anti-trust authorities, will be headquartered in Düsseldorf. The joint venture is anticipated to launch in early 2011.

Addressing the challenges posed by traditional greases and phase-change thermal interface materials, Henkel has developed and commercialized Loctite PowerstrateXtreme Printable (PSX-P), a new print-friendly thermal management product.

Since conventional PUR hotmelts take up to eight hours to cure, reliable quality checks are only possible after the completion of an entire job, even in the case of large print runs. In the worst case, this can mean a high level of wastage and complaints and generate high costs. Henkel is now taking this weight off bookbinders’ minds. Diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), a plasticizer frequently used until now in adhesives for the paper converting industry, is suspected of being harmful to health. The German manufacturers and processors of paper, board and cardboard have therefore undertaken to stop using products containing DiBP. To protect consumers in the long term, Henkel has now come up with a solution – the Adhesin A 78 Series, a new generation of plasticizer-free adhesives formulations for all applications in the paper and packaging industry.
